District heating
District heating relieves the electricity grid by taking heating off it, and on the coldest winter days it is what keeps the peak load away. No two plants are alike - waste, wood chips, seawater or waste heat from industry - and all are electricity consumers with facilities of their own. Those that produce power or run their own grid report to Elhub as well.

No two plants are alike
Waste, wood chips, seawater or surplus heat from industry. A system that assumes one kind of plant fits almost none of you.
Plan B is not optional
Everyone has backup capacity, and it runs on diesel, LNG or similar. Not on electricity: the whole point of district heating is to relieve the grid, so burning grid power defeats it.
On the coldest days you are the grid’s insurance
When the cold sets in and consumption peaks, district heating is what keeps the peak load off the electricity grid. In densely built areas that is the difference between a grid that holds and one that does not.
Three customer types in one segment
Every district heating company is itself an electricity consumer with sites of its own. Some also produce power and report to Elhub as a producer. Some run their own grid with no grid owner to lean on. The three make entirely different demands.
The rules that apply to you
- Elhub applies where you meet the electricity market, and nowhere else: as a consumer, as a power producer or as a grid owner. Pure heat meters are not part of Elhub at all, and do not belong there.
- If you run your own grid you are a grid owner, with everything that entails: the same message processes, deadlines and approval requirements as any grid company, with no grid owner to lean on.
- If you produce power, you report production data into Elhub on the same terms as any power plant.
- District heating itself requires a licence and is regulated by NVE, and is metered and settled separately from electricity.

What we do not cover
- Heat production and the operation of the plant itself. No boiler control, no SCADA. We work with data about the plant, not with the plant.
- Energy-efficiency and Enova advisory. We have no service there today, and we do not write about one we do not have.

- Elhub
- National hub for metering data and market processes in the Norwegian electricity market.
- Metering point
- The fundamental unit in Elhub - the unique point in the electricity network where energy is measured and settled, identified by an 18-digit GSRN number.
- Grid company
- Company that owns and operates electricity grids and is responsible for power supply to end users.
- Power producer
- Company or entity that generates electricity from energy sources such as hydropower, wind or solar.
- VEE
- Validation, Estimation, Editing - systematic process to ensure quality of raw metering data from electricity meters.
