District Heating

Definition

District heating is a system in which heat produced centrally (from waste, biomass, heat pumps or surplus heat) is distributed to buildings via insulated hot-water pipes. In Norway, district heating requires a licence and is regulated by NVE. District heating is metered and settled separately from electricity, but digitalisation and smart meters are creating increased interaction between district heating and electricity systems.

In practice

In practice, district heating is an alternative to electricity for space heating - and thus a competitor that affects power suppliers' customer portfolios in cities with district heating networks. For IT systems, district heating is relevant in two contexts: energy optimisation (MDM data is used to calculate the energy mix per building) and CSRD reporting (district heating has its own emission factors that must be documented separately from electricity in Scope 2 calculations).
