A metering value is the amount of energy that passed one metering pointThe fundamental unit in Elhub - the unique point in the electricity network where energy is measured and settled, identified by an 18-digit GSRN number. during one period of time - in practice most often an hour or a quarter of an hour. The value carries more than the number: which metering point it belongs to, which period, which direction (offtake or infeed), and a quality flag saying whether it was read, estimated or corrected. That quality flag is exactly why metering values cannot be treated as plain numbers. An estimated value later replaced by a read one must trigger re-settlementTurning metering data into money. Consumption and production per metering point become what each party owes or is owed.; a value that is missing entirely must not silently become zero. Where this goes wrong is rarely the measurement itself, but what happens between the meter and the settlement: gaps after communication failures, duplicates after re-transmission, and values that never arrived.
