IEC 81346 describes how to name parts of a technical system so the designation means the same to everyone. Its core is that one and the same object can be designated from three different viewpoints: what it does (function), where it sits (location), and what it is (product). A pump has a function designation in the process, a location designation in the building, and a product designation as a physical unit - and the three are not the same string. The standard is the basis for RDSReference designation system per ISO/IEC 81346.
