A concentrator sits between the meters in the field and the collection system. It asks a group of smart meters for their values at a fixed interval, typically every 6, 12, 18 or 24 hours, and forwards the batch to the head-end system. The meters record values far more often than they are asked. The concentrator measures nothing itself, it gathers.
