Definition
SMG is the production-planning system many Nordic power producers have run their planning on for years - for hydro, thermal and gas. It is established in the sense that matters operationally: operating routines, customisations and a whole layer of embedded working practice have grown around it over time. Volue is now phasing SMG out in favour of MeshVolue's newer, object-oriented data-handling system underpinning the Smart Power suite - the successor to SMG.. Crucially this is not a version upgrade. Mesh models data in an object-oriented way, a different paradigm from SMG - assumptions that held in SMG do not necessarily hold any more. An SMG installation that has been stable for years therefore represents not just a system to be replaced, but a set of embedded assumptions that must be surfaced and re-examined.
