NEMO (Nominated Electricity Market Operator) is a role defined in the CACM Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2015/1222 on capacity allocation and congestion managementMeasures and processes for managing situations where demand for grid capacity exceeds supply - between bidding zones or within the distribution network.. A NEMO is designated by the member state or the national regulatory authority, and its task is to operate the power exchange as part of European market coupling: receiving bids, running the common algorithm that clears the day-ahead market across bidding zones, and doing the same continuously for the intraday market. The role is therefore both commercial and regulated - a NEMO is a marketplace, but with obligations grounded in EU law rather than solely in its own terms of business. In the Nordics, Nord PoolNordic electricity exchange where power is traded in the wholesale market - the basis for electricity prices in Norway and the Nordic region. is the best known, and several NEMOs may operate within the same bidding zone.
