Origin of the word
The word "tvimenning" has deep roots in Old Norse culture and language. It is composed of the prefix tvi- (two or double) and -menning (derived from human being). Quite literally, it means "a team of two" - the smallest possible unit of collaboration.
Historically, the word is the original term for what we today call a cousin - a relative close enough to trust, but with just enough distance for both to preserve their autonomy and professional judgement. For us this is the ideal professional relationship: we are related in vision and purpose, but independent enough to complement each other. We see our customers and partners as our "business-tvimennings".
The word also lives on in Icelandic, where "tvímendingur" today means doubles partner - the tennis partner you share the court with and must coordinate every move with. Living proof that some words are too good to forget.
Old Norse work culture
In ancient times, the term was used among other things about workers who operated an "okshøvelTraditional Norwegian carpentry and boat-building tool - a specialised plane for precisely creating the double overlap joints known as tvimenning in wooden boat construction." - a large and heavy hand plane that required muscle power from two people. The workers stood bent towards each other; one pulled, the other pushed.
For the tool to glide across the wood, the two had to find a common rhythm and a shared breath. If they worked out of sync, the plane stopped. The Viking Age pact
Another powerful historical aspect of the name is the ritual of "drinking tvimenning". In the Middle Ages and Viking Age, this was a custom where two people drank ale from exactly the same drinking vessel - often a carved "kjengeTraditional Nordic drinking vessel shared between two people - the symbol of tvimenning: two doing something side by side.".
This was more than just a toast - it was a guarantee of safety and a pact of shared destiny. Since the heavy vessel had to be held with both hands, it functioned as a physical truce. If the contents were poisoned, it would affect both. For us, this is a precise description of how we share risk with our customers: we tie our own success directly to the results created - and we do not leave the table if something does not work.

We name our products after Old Norse words because we want the names to tell a story. They reflect the craftsmanship and collaboration behind every single product. It is a common thread that connects what we stand for with everything we create.

Digital twinVirtual copy of a physical object or system that updates in real time - used for simulation and optimisation in the power grid. has been an industry term for years: a system that exists twice, one mirroring the other. That is tvimenning translated into the present, almost word for word. We chose an Old Norse word to describe how we work, and found that it already described where the technology was heading.
We drew it into the logoTvimenning's mark - two Tiwaz runes on the same stem, together forming a tree, inside a frame.. It looks like one mark with three chevrons, but it is in fact two runes - one in front and one behind, offset by exactly one chevron. You never see the fourth, because it hides behind the front one. Two close enough to overlap, and offset enough that neither disappears.
But a tvimenning was never two of the same. The coopering plane needed one to pull and one to steer. The cousin is close enough to trust, distant enough to keep their own judgement. The asymmetry is what makes the pair useful - two who can do exactly the same thing do not need each other. The same pair shows up in the products: a componentA replaceable part inside a fixed asset. It has its own age, its own history and its own service life - independent of the asset it sits in. out in the grid does the work, while the register knows what it is and where it has been. Neither is any use alone.
That is how we see artificial intelligence too: not as a copy of ourselves, and not as a servant, but as the other end of the plane. We work hard at understanding it, so that we can use it safely and effectively - for ourselves and for our customers. And a partner who does not remember the last session is no partner. Holding on to knowledge and reusing it is a precondition, not an addition.
